I have 4 years of healthcare sales experience (med device/biotech). I am looking to transition into tech sales. Should I be looking at starting over in an SDR role or should I be applying for mid-market and/or enterprise opportunities?
Thanks for your advice. I really appreciate it. Going to go all out for an Enterprise role, then adjust for Mid-Market or SDR if necessary.
I am new to Repvue! I think I posted my response?
There's a lot of hurry up and wait going on right now, just fyi. My company has interviewed a bunch of people over the last several months but hasn't pulled the trigger on anyone. Why are you wanting to switch.
I need to be able to work virtually. I enjoy pharma but it is not conducive to my family obligations anymore. This also limits my options in tech, as many have hybrid models. Still, there are companies offering fully remote work options and I am focused on those.
Definitely go straight for Enterprise Roles! And stick with/look for the Health Care and Life Sciences Vertical - With your background you will be golden! I would suggest Looking at Workday, and Salesforce, Mulesoft, and the Big Tech companies they are both hiring for that role and Healthcare and Life sciences The “sexier” start-up growing tech or less mature/ not public companies will interview cause of your ‘diverse background’ but ultimately they will want someone with true SaaS experience (which means you have to already worked for the ones I just mentioned…I know right?!) Lastly!! I am trying to switch from tech sales into Med Device Sales so would be super happy to chat to inversely help each other out
I'd advise going straight to the MM or Ent AE role if you can land it. I started over in an SDR role but only had 2 years of BTC sales in a completely different industry than tech so I wasn't opposed to learning the ropes of a large tech provider with many offerings. You'd also want to see how long it would take you to get promoted from SDR to an AE role, since some larger tech companies require their SDR's to put 1-2 years in before even considering you for a promotion...so you'd have to ask yourself if you're alright with doing the SDR grind for 18 months given that you already have 4 years of sales experience. I'd document how your experience in healthcare sales applies to the job requirements of the AE roles you're looking for so you can better sell yourself into an AE role. Up to you at the end of the day if you want to restart but with 4 years of experience I'd give the AE route a shot first then revert to SDR options if that doesn't work.
