I’ve spent the last 6 years in medical device sales but am looking to get out of healthcare and into software or tech sales. But I honestly don’t even know where to begin. What are some places/companies/job boards etc to find sales jobs that are likely to pay $200K+? Any advice on how to transition or any info on high-paying sales gigs outside of med device would be greatly appreciated.

May I ask why you want out of Med Device? Currently deciding between the two

I just want something more business-oriented. Something where I don’t have to deal with insurance or (as much) access issues. Personally, I love cold-calling (in-person) and would like to be able to hunt more. No idea what the other side of the fence looks like, per se, I’m sure it has its fair share of problems too.

I made the transition from pharmaceutical sales into technology. Think about how you can leverage your experience working in the healthcare space and the knowledge you have of the medical device industry. Leverage this knowledge with your sales experience. Think about tools or software that you use yourself and reach out to those companies. Or think about the health systems, surgery centers, or ambulatory groups and the kind of software or technology they use. There's a good chance you'd understand the value of those products and can articulate it well or at least understand it better than others. Create conversations around that. There's plenty of healthcare technology companies and companies with a healthcare vertical that pay $200k+ OTE.

These are great thoughts. Appreciate you taking the time to give that detailed response. This has my wheels spinning

You may have to start from scratch as a BDR or SDR but I'd look for those type of positions first in tech sales - companies are always hiring for this type of entry-level role. You can quickly work your way up to an AE from there.

Thanks, that makes sense. I’m happy to take one step backwards for a short period if I can find something I like. I’m going to look start searching for BDR/SDR

Are you in a closing role currently? Don’t take a step back into a BDR/SDR position if you are. You can make the transition straight into an AE at the right company.

Don't be an BDR selling med device more than qualifies you for an enterprise role. I'd argue selling in the hospital setting especially for large capital projects is more complex than a software purchase.

i’ve transitioned a couple of times in my career. it definitely can be done, but you need to tweak some things around. First change, all of industry, specific jargon, and to toss it out the door. I will go deep into the actual company that you’re applying for hopefully something that you’ve used and parlay that into the interest of potentially selling for that vendor. I would try to casually connect or look for first or secondary degree connections in any company that you’re interested in. networking is the easiest way in but if that doesn’t work you need to get scrappy. Is this something that a lot of sales folks are interested in?

That’s good advice, thank you. Going to keep my eye out.
