Former Employee Mixed. Some years I did well on comp, others were a struggle. There was always a threat of layoffs which were sometimes but not always performance based. If you had a good year your quota for the next year was raised accordingly. If you developed a very close relationship with a client generally you would be moved to a different segment or client based. AT&T wants to maintain the client relationship at a leadership level & not allow the sales teams to gain too much influence in the client relationship. A lot of the people are tenured & holdovers from the big-carrier days & AT&T is constantly struggling to get these highly-paid tenured people off payroll. As a result Ageism is an inevitable factor. On the other side of it younger salespeople tend to get overwhelmed by the process and technical aspects of the job along with the high quotas & long sales cycles & leave for a sexier role in tech/software.
