Some older reps were told there would be opportunities in other arms of the company (ex. Marketing, Analytics), but they were pushed or disappeared. From and industry vertical and client base and strategic standpoint, some sales managers have a superior advantage. It isn't uncommon that these reps also maintain the majority of business.
