Most sales people burn out in 1-2 years. Those that last longer typically stay where they are. Once in a while someone takes a sales manager job or enterprise accounts job, but that is very rare. Successful sales people often move elsewhere to more lucrative companies, usually selling equipment.

Johnson Controls is a large organization with various sales teams to join. Typically, individuals start at a BSNA branch, which primarily deals with deploying building, security, and fire solutions. Alternatively, there are opportunities in their HVAC or smart infrastructure departments.  Remember they own 50 other sister companies that you can sell. Tyco and Hachita is a prime example. There isn't a one-size-fits-all path, but if you excel in your role, advancement to management isn't overly challenging. People frequently move both vertically and laterally to other departments. Overall, it's a great company to be a part of, although there are notable politics and annual changes to commission plans. While they offer a strong base salary, their incentive commission structure may not match up to those of Series A startup organizations.
