How do you feel about the sales compensation plan at Tipalti?

You get paid on deal’s potential. The software piece of the sale is very small- $5-$20k and the majority of the deal is based on transaction volume which is estimated at the time of the sale.
After a few months the deal is re evaluated and if it’s not hitting transaction metrics assumed - clawback

The comp plan has a generous base rate (relative to quotas) and strong accelerators for overperformance. It's usage-based so you can still be retiring quota and getting commission top-ups from previous years' deals that overperform--have heard of numerous other AEs getting unexpected payouts because their customers were using the solution more than estimated, which is sweet. The payout timing can be complicated and there is a lot of reliance on the implementation team to take the project to go-live. But company has overestimated any potential issues this might cause by slapping on a 15% bonus on the everyone's variable pay, so my OTE is actually higher than what I signed up for. It's not perfect but there is good potential to make a lot of money!

The good is that if deals do really well, you can make a lot of money, and the company pays you fairly. But the problem is, sometimes things outside of the AE's control can go wrong, and then you might only get 50% or less of what you were supposed to be paid, especially after clawbacks.

Compensation structure is one of the worst I've seen in the software industry. Commissions never come through because you depend on the client using the product, and if they don't even go live, you won't get anything else but a claw back.
