What is the usual career progression for sales professionals at Paychex?

I've been at Paychex for a year as a MMS HCM Consultant (fancy name for salesperson).

Assuming you start in small business, it would be Channel Sales -> MMS HCM Consultant -> Sr MMS HCM Consultant -> Enterprise HCM Consultant -> Sr Enterprise HCM Consultant.

That is if you climb as an individual contributor and don't want to go leadership route. There are a ton of people in the MMS space that have done it for 10-15 years and never gone up market because they like the MMS space. I haven't seen a ton of people climbing quickly, so I'd assume you need to do well for 3-4 years, and hope a vacancy up-market aligns with your success.

Additionally, I think about 12% of all East MMS reps hit quota last year, and from the looks of it this fiscal, we will end at maybe 15-20%.

Not much progression, start as an associate and move up as you attain quota. Can go into leadership, but no one really talks about any other avenues.

There are little to no growth plans for sales to go into leadership. You need to be a top rep in your department to think of switching departments. And it’s all based on management approval.

Varies widely. I was recruited and trained with 60+ new hires across the US in late 2022. 90% of them had left before 6 months had passed. Just before I started my cohort of 60,  a co-worker of mine was in his own cohort of about 60 people about 2 - 3 weeks prior to me.

There is potential in the company but on the whole, your trajectory will depend on how well your individual leadership is in combination with the territory you receive.

Some who do well get moved on to team supervisor or selling supervisor roles. Some move to different departments altogether (payroll to HR to 401k, etc.). In general though, expect very high turn over and what most would consider unreasonable expectations of quota.

It depends on where you start. From a SMB role it’s either into becoming a bank or cpa centric rep or going into a specific vertical like ASO or PEO. Then usually if you’re there long enough into team leads (8-10 people per team). There are district leads over that and then area leads above them.
