VMware could be run more effectively, the amount of management was staggering but the cuts in personel and product by Broadcom completely alienated customer, employees and partners. The current product, customer and partner focus is setting it up for a Symantec/CA-like disaster.

With the impending Broadcom acquisition things have changed. Multiple leaders have left, new processes have been put in place that delay sales cycles. Any deal over $10M in ARR requires an approval process that adds at least a month before you have anything you can share with a customer. No one has a sense of urgency until the acquisition is complete.
