Question

Passed the loop and was initially heading to an Enterprise or SMB team (SDR), but the role had been filled, and I'm now assigned "Inclined" status.

Recruiter reached out today and said they'd like to put me on an ISV team.

Would love to hear your thoughts - would it be best to accept ISV, or wait?

Take the ISV role. You’ve already gotten through the toughest part which is getting through Loop. Once you are in AWS and assuming you do well, you can change orgs later. AWS is massive and there are always opportunities to grow if you prove yourself.

To be honest, I think the ISV team could actually be a better role. AWS is strong at selling to software companies and you’ll often be dealing with founders and CEOs given they are both customers and partners of AWS. It also gets you into AWS, which isn’t easy.

The ISV role is the better opportunity. AWS does a great job of facilitating relationships with partners and you'll be in the mix of deal strategy, collaboration, and channel sales.

ISV would be a great start as an SDR here.  ENT and SMB can be a tough place to get your feet wet as some verticals/segments are better than others and you're kinda playing the lottery odds.  ISV are often partners of AWS, too, so they like using our resources and programs to improve their product to their customers.

With the push of GenAI, too, a lot of ISV's are going to want to incorporate it into their products and AWS has a plethora of opportunities, programs and resources to guide them through.

ISV segment is one of the fastest growing segment at AWS. as a SDR you will enjoy the conversations with the ISV vendors who will be more open and unbiased as compared to the Enterprise customers. Once you are in the role and if you feel like you are stuck, you always have an option to move internally which is easier than applying as an external candidate.

There isn't an objectively 'bad' segment at AWS. Each has their pros and cons, based on your preferences and career goals. As an ISV DGR, you'd work with established AWS customers mainly on the go-to-market initiatives and making sure your AEs like you (they'll give you opps to input into SFDC and get paid). It can be tough to find where you 'add value', but there's good money to be made and more diverse external career opportunities than SMB or Enterprise.
