Is Large Enterprise AE role the lowest role you can get here as an AE? If I took a BDE role what is the likelihood of getting promoted to an AE role and if so would it be to Large Enterprise AE?

AE isn’t necessarily a step up from BDE. BD’s are solely responsible for winning new business while AE’s are responsible for growth and renewals. To my knowledge comp is relatively similar, it’s more a matter of what you prefer to do day to day.

Gartner is rare in that we hire very senior, well paid BDs for those that love the new business side.

I.e. AE isn't necessarily a step up from BD, and moreso a different role.

AEs focus more on existing with a couple of whitespace.

The honest answer is that BD is poorly run and difficult in Large Enterprise in the US.  Therefore any transfer would be difficult to achieve, as it will be difficult to hit quota.  Ask the percentage of BD’S on the team you’re looking at hit quota in 23 and 24. Don’t focus on the story they give, get the hard number facts.  AE is a different role and would be a lateral transfer, it’s not a promotion.

At Gartner, BD roles are often more senior and require more experience than AE roles. Often times, BDs are AEs who have been promoted. BDs are responsible for the vast majority of new client acquisition, and AEs are responsible for managing and growing existing accounts.

AEs are responsible for account management and new business while BDs are responsible for new business only.

In terms of seniority, AE = BDM, Senior AE = BDE, Client Exec = BDD and Senior Client Exec = Senior BDD. Comps are similar for AE/BD but the OTE split is weighted more toward comm for BD
