Question

Meeting with a recruiter next week to discuss the different AE roles (assuming specialist vs core). Any recos/tips walking into it? Ultimate goal is just to land a role at Salesforce..

Best of luck with the interview! I would focus on why you are wanting to go into one of those specific roles and why you want to stick with sales specifically. From there emphasize your organizational skills, discipline in doing the small things right and also being collaborative / coachable. Be able to call out what you are good at to bring to the team and where you want to improve.

If you are choosing between core or specialist I would ask yourself do you want to be the QB of the account team and call the shots and be responsible for the customers as their main point of contact OR do you want to work on a team and be more of a team member that is trying to position themselves into opportunities and be really good at a specific value prop / product

Know as much about the company as possible.  Watch some Dreamforce vids, especially the keynotes.  Salesforce has some YT vids explaining everything they do.  I thought I knew SF but realized they do so much more and I think that helped me during the interview process.

Good luck!  Salesforce is definitely looking for specialist and people that can go vertical, so you have a leg up if you can do that, but in the end they want raw intelligence about selling and experience closing deals.  Focus on your abilities and if you have a vertical it helps, but is not necessary.

You want a Core AE role, specialist roles are terrible if you aren't a specialist in those areas already i.e. marketing cloud, analytics, service, etc. Core is a generalist role and you have way more control over the sales cycle as salesforce moved to a Core vs. Co-prime model vs. having "prime AEs" which basically means instead of running your own show with the same customer and different stakeholders, the Core AE ultimately has the final say on the strategy and how the account is sold to.

If the goal is just to "land" then a specialist role in a product like Tableau, Slack, or Data Cloud would be very good to go with. However a Core AE role is going to be where you want to be to  ultimately succeed and make money in my opinion.
