Former Employee It used to be a great place to work — the values, the visionary CEO, and all those stories were true to some extent, but all of that disappeared a long time ago. GitLab is now just like any other tech company, meaning the culture depends heavily on who your direct boss is. There’s a lot of uncertainty, unachievable quotas, high rep attrition rates, micromanagement, and plenty of politics if you want to get anything done.
The company has already seen its best days. Now it’s lagging far behind its competitors with a very unclear path forward.
The new leadership (CEO, CRO, etc.) comes from failed companies and seems intent on planting a sort of sweatshop culture, publicly praising individuals who go “above and beyond” by working extra hours or prioritizing work over personal well-being.
Another issue deeply rooted in the company is its absolute aversion to promoting people internally through the field sales ranks. Employees can spend 3–4 years stuck in SDR or entry-level AE roles before even being considered for a promotion, all while external candidates are hired, perform poorly for two or three quarters, and then leave with terrible numbers.
