Given the current economic climate, would existing/former reps recommend joining Gartner? More specifically UK (if not, general too)

My experience has a new joiner is that as an AE at Gartner , it can be very much a hit or a miss in terms of your inheritated accounts . Some reps will hit winners due to the foundational work the previous rep did and some will inherite red accounts with little to no engagement .

I slightly disagree with the previous answer, Advisory is not usually seen as essential so when orgs go into fight or flight mode non essential investments are usually the first to go. Unless...The client and the sales process are properly executed and aligned to the core of the business and Gartners services become essential then in this case I confirm the previous answer, easier said than done. Nevertheless, Targets are realistic, they continue their double digit growth and you will become a better professional for working there. it depends on where you are on your career. At this point I would not personally go back (Salaries are relatively low) but I have been there twice and it definitely played a pivotal role in my professional life, both in terms of money and education.

What's the business unit? In my experience, I inherited absolutely trash accounts. Only two reps in my region hit winner circle and they were 3 years tenured.  Unless you are selling to end-user, high-tech clients want one thing: positive research and mentions. If you find yourself with clients that sell niche/point solutions in a nascent covered market on G.com and few analysts to engage, you will have an incredibly challenging time. The pay is ok, but  you can make more at startups in tech than doing R&A sales. BUT if you want access to cool research, work with smart people, and are comfortable navigating non-linear buying cycles involving a lot of lying - you'll be great.

Great question, I was previously laid off and I was very nervous about being laid off again. I can tell you without a doubt Gartner is growing. We are constantly hiring new reps and we thrive when the economy is bad because organizations switch from consulting to gartner advisory.

I was with Gartner during 2020 and it was extremely solid. Leadership and the decisions they make are not "sexy" but keep the company on extremely good footing and able to weather economic storms.

I would ask, is this a growth territory or a PIP'd territory.  When I was hired in, I was hired in to a PIP'd territory and guess what; there have been 3 more after me in 3 years.  Like someone said here, it is the luck of the draw on what you get.  During this market, if it was PIP'd- I would walk away.  When you sell a nice to have, its the first thing to come off the budget shee.

I agree with my counterpart. Gartner is not perfect, but a difficult economic climate exists everywhere. Gartner is in a better position than most to capitalize and ride it out.

Gartner has a solid management team--but they have done layoffs before and at some point they will again--just a reality of a company with ~20k employees.  Can you be any more specific about what group you're looking to?  GTS is all of the "legacy" gartner business--selling to CIOs and Technology vendors--I believe it's been a tough go for them this year--and actually that group's business started softening up second half of last year.  GBS has achieved outstanding growth--they're the group that sells service to the rest of the C-Suite--marketing, finance, hr, etc.

It will really depend on the role and the B/U you are in. Best thing you could do is ask for granularity in achievement last year and YTD for the B/U or vertical this role is for. Gartner is good about talking about company wide or Macro achievements. Research the target industry for the role.
